Gaza on the Brink: Israel Intensifies Operations Amidst Growing Humanitarian Crisis
As of August 20,2025,the situation in Gaza remains dire, with Israel escalating air strikes and ground operations. Israeli military actions, a regular occurrence for years, have claimed thousands of Palestinian lives. Recent reports indicate a planned “prolonged operation of several months that will run into 2026,” according to Israeli army radio.
The military is focusing its efforts on areas around Gaza City, specifically Zeitoun and Jabalia, where intense operations have already begun. An Israeli military official stated that the new phase of combat will be “a gradual, precise, and targeted operation in and around Gaza City,” including areas previously untouched. On wednesday, at least 21 people were killed across the territory, according to Gaza’s civil defence agency.
The humanitarian situation is rapidly deteriorating. Residents of Sabra report ongoing shelling. Amidst the rubble and damaged buildings, Palestinians are struggling to secure basic necessities.Shawg Al-Badri,a Gazan resident, described the desperate need for food, stating that a bag of flour is “worth the whole world,” and takes “three to four hours” to carry back to her family’s tent.
These developments come as Israel faces increasing pressure both domestically and internationally. The conflict began with Hamas’s October 2023 attack on israel, which resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, mostly civilians. Israel’s subsequent offensive has killed at least 62,064 Palestinians, most of whom are civilians, according to figures from the health ministry in Hamas-run gaza, which the united Nations considers reliable.
Access to Gaza remains restricted, making independent verification of reports challenging. The israeli military has stated it will investigate reports of eight people killed by Israeli fire near an aid site, but requires specific coordinates and timeframes. Despite these challenges, the situation on the ground is described as “very dangerous and unbearable” by agency spokesman Mahmud Bassal.
