UN Official: Gaza Humanitarian Aid Distribution a ”Deadly Trap”
Updated June 01, 2025
Teh distribution of humanitarian aid in Gaza has become a “deadly trap,” according to Philippe Lazzarini, head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). Lazzarini reported Saturday that violence erupted during an aid distribution, resulting in numerous casualties among civilians.
Lazzarini highlighted the dangers faced by those seeking essential assistance, emphasizing the urgent need for safe and large-scale aid deliveries. He stressed that the current system is failing to protect vulnerable populations amidst ongoing conflict and displacement, making the delivery of humanitarian aid a deadly trap.
The location of the distribution center in Rafah, southern Gaza, has also drawn criticism. Lazzarini described it as a “humiliating system” that forces desperate people to travel long distances through areas affected by israeli military actions to receive humanitarian aid. This situation exacerbates the risks and challenges faced by civilians already struggling with hunger and displacement, further complicating aid distribution efforts.
“This morning, shots made many victims, including dozens of injured and dead among hungry civilians,” Lazzarini said.
The head of UNRWA also deplores that the distribution center has been placed “Good south, in Rafah”, denouncing a “humiliating system which forced thousands of hungry and desperate people to walk tens of kilometers to an area almost sprayed by the bombing of the Israeli army”.
Lazzarini reiterated that the United Nations, including UNRWA, must play a central role in ensuring the safe and effective delivery of aid to those in need. He called for immediate action to improve the security and logistics of aid distribution to prevent further loss of life and suffering.
What’s next
The United Nations and other international organizations are expected to discuss strategies for improving aid delivery and ensuring the safety of civilians in Gaza. Further assessments of the humanitarian situation will likely inform future aid efforts and diplomatic initiatives.
