Updated June 11, 2025
Eight pro-Palestinian activists, part of a group attempting to reach Gaza by boat, remain in israeli detention, according to a human rights NGO. The activists, who were aboard the vessel “Madleen,” were intercepted by the Israeli army. Among those detained are four French citizens.
An Israeli court has confirmed detention orders for the eight activists until their next hearing, scheduled for July 8, the NGO stated. Rima Hassan, a French member of the European Parliament, was present for most of the hearing. The association noted that israeli law allows for a 72-hour detention period before potential deportation for illegal entry.
While four activists—including swedish activist Greta Thunberg, two other french citizens, and one Spanish citizen—returned to their home countries Tuesday, the remaining eight have refused to sign documents authorizing their expulsion. They maintain they did not illegally enter Israeli territory, as they were arrested in international waters.
joshua Zarka, Israel’s ambassador to France, addressed the situation during a Senate hearing on the Middle East, stating that the four French detainees have “illegal immigrant” status. He added that the goal is to return them to france as soon as possible.
The NGO is challenging the court’s submission of laws concerning illegal entry into israel, arguing that these laws do not apply to activists arrested in international waters. The activists are currently held in a detention center in Ramla, near Ben-Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv. The group includes four French citizens, a German, a Turk, a Dutch citizen, and a Brazilian.
