Congressional Pushback Against Trump’s Iran War Strategy
Updated June 17, 2025
As the fifth day of the Israel-Iran war unfolds, President Trump’s approach to the conflict is drawing increased scrutiny from Congress. While U.S. forces have been deployed to the Middle east for what the administration calls “defensive” purposes, bipartisan concerns are mounting over the potential for deeper U.S. military involvement and the need for congressional approval.
Reps. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) and ro Khanna (D-Calif.) are set to introduce a resolution asserting that Congress must authorize any commitment of U.S. armed forces to military action against Iran. The move underscores growing unease on both sides of the aisle regarding the president’s authority to act unilaterally.
“This is not our war,” Massie stated on X. “But if it were, Congress must decide such matters according to our Constitution.” Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has already signaled her support for the resolution.
Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) has also introduced a war powers resolution aimed at preventing the unauthorized use of U.S. forces against Iran. Kaine’s resolution seeks to reaffirm Congress’s constitutional role in declaring war.
Trump, facing pressure from Israel, has advocated for a diplomatic resolution but has also suggested potential U.S.intervention if Iran targets American assets.
In a recent post on Truth Social, trump stated,”If we are attacked in any way, shape or form by Iran, the full strength and might of the US Armed Forces will come down on you at levels never seen before.”
What’s next
The resolutions introduced in both the House and Senate signal a growing determination by lawmakers to assert their constitutional authority over military actions, setting the stage for a potential showdown with the executive branch over U.S. policy toward Iran.
