Tensions in the middle East soared after Israel launched an aerial assault on Iran, destroying the above-ground uranium enrichment plant at Natanz.Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), reported “contamination” at the site.
The UN Security Council convened an emergency meeting Friday in New York, where Grossi and other officials called for de-escalation to prevent a broader regional conflict. The Israeli strike targeted multiple Iranian nuclear and military sites, and also senior military personnel, according to Iran’s UN Envoy Amir Saeid Iravani.

Grossi stated that nuclear facilities should never be attacked, citing potential harm to people and the environment. He confirmed radiological and chemical contamination at Natanz, where Iran was enriching uranium up to 60 percent. the IAEA is prepared to send experts to help secure the site, adding that the contamination is manageable.
UN Undersecretary-General for Political affairs Rosemary DiCarlo echoed the call for restraint, emphasizing the need for a peaceful resolution through negotiation to ensure the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program. she warned against a growing conflict with global consequences.
Iravani described the Israeli attacks as a “declaration of war” and a “direct assault on international order,” reporting 78 deaths and over 320 injuries. He accused the U.S. of providing intelligence and political support, holding them responsible for the consequences.
“Supporting Israel today is supporting war crimes,” Iravani said.
U.S. representative McCoy Pitt denied military involvement but defended the strikes as necessary for Israel’s self-defense. Pitt warned Iran against retaliating against U.S. bases or citizens, stating that the “consequences for Iran would be dire.”
Israel’s UN envoy Danny Danon framed the attack as “an act of national preservation,” claiming Iran was close to producing enough material for multiple nuclear weapons.
“This operation was carried out as the choice was unthinkable,” Danon said. “How long did the world expect us to wait? Until they assemble the bomb? Until they mount it on a Shahab missile? Until it is en route to Tel Aviv or Jerusalem?”
While the UN meeting was underway, Iran launched a counterattack, firing ballistic missiles at Israeli targets. Iravani affirmed Iran’s right to self-defense, promising a “decisive and proportionate” response.
“This is not a threat, this is the natural, legal and necessary consequence of an unprovoked military act,” he said.
Russia’s UN ambassador, vassily Nebenzia, condemned Israel’s actions as a “gross violation of the UN Charter and international law,” warning of a potential “large-scale nuclear catastrophe.”
