Israel’s ‍Role: ⁢Risks to Iran’s Nuclear Program and Population

Updated June 14, 2025

While Israel may be able⁣ to inflict damage on Iran’s nuclear program,⁢ wholly destroying it is ⁢unlikely, according to analysts. ⁢The fortified facilities in Natanz and Fordow ⁢would require more powerful ⁣weaponry than Israel possesses, said Vaez. ⁣He added that U.S. military assistance ‍would likely be necessary for complete destruction.

Kelsey Davenport, an expert⁢ with the Arms‍ Control Association, emphasized that even an unprecedented attack ‍by Israel could not eliminate the nuclear expertise Iran has developed, despite‍ the past killings of Iranian nuclear scientists. The attacks and the potential ⁤damage play a significant⁤ role in the geopolitical landscape.

The International Atomic Energy Agency ⁢(IAEA) has⁢ not detected increased ‍radiation levels at affected sites. Davenport stated that the risk of harmful radiation release from ⁤attacks ⁤on uranium enrichment facilities is minimal.Though, ‍she cautioned that an attack on Bushehr, Iran’s sole nuclear power plant, could have severe consequences for both⁣ health and the habitat. The role of international oversight remains crucial.

“There is very little risk⁢ that attacks on iran’s uranium enrichment facilities would result in a harmful radiation⁢ release,” ⁢said Davenport.

Following Israeli strikes, IAEA chief Rafael⁢ Grossi⁣ asserted that nuclear facilities must never be attacked. He warned that targeting ⁢Iranian sites could have grave repercussions for⁤ the Iranian people, the region, and beyond. The international community’s role ⁣ in preventing such attacks is ⁢paramount.

What’s next

The⁤ international community will likely continue to⁣ monitor the situation closely, with ongoing debates about the best course of action to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons and to minimize risks to the population and environment.
