Israel & Iran Nuclear Threat: Latest News & Analysis
Israeli Strikes Escalate Tensions Over Iran Nuclear Program
Updated June 17, 2025
Recent Israeli military operations, dubbed “Operation Rising Lion,” have significantly impacted Iran’s military capabilities and command structure, raising questions about the future of its iran nuclear program. While satellite imagery confirms damage to Iranian facilities, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) stated that there where no radiation spikes as of June 13.

Before the initial missile strikes, Israel launched one-way attack drones from a covertly assembled base near Tehran. These drones targeted Iranian ballistic missile launchers and air defense systems, weakening Iran’s ability to retaliate. Despite iran’s preparations, including repositioning missile launchers and air defense components near nuclear sites like Natanz and Fordow, the Israeli assault was largely successful.
A key aspect of the operation was the elimination of senior Iranian commanders and nuclear scientists. The precision of these targeted killings, including Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Commander Hossein salami and Armed Forces General Staff Mohammad Bagheri, suggests a robust intelligence network within Iran’s leadership circles.
The Israeli air assault has disrupted Iranian command and control, leading to a disorganized counterattack.Although Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei quickly appointed replacements for slain commanders, Iran’s response, involving approximately 100 drones and ballistic missiles, resulted in casualties and damage to buildings in Tel Aviv and other areas. However, the military impact on Israeli capabilities was limited.
The military utility of Iran’s counter assault is negligible, as it failed to degrade Israeli military capabilities by any degree. The October 2024 air assault on Israel caused some damage to IDF airbases in Tel Nof and Negev and other military sites in central Israel.
Israel has achieved air superiority over Iran, leaving Iranian military assets and nuclear sites vulnerable. The destruction of missile launchers and silos further weakens Iran’s ability to respond. with its conventional military capabilities diminishing and its leadership in crisis, Iran faces a notable operational disadvantage.
The White House has signaled that iran must abandon its nuclear ambitions for hostilities to cease. Given its weakened position and regional isolation, continued Israeli strikes could force Iran to negotiate denuclearization and allow international watchdogs to oversee its nuclear facilities. However, Iran has so far rejected further nuclear talks.
