Record-Breaking Performance
Israel Olatunde, representing Ireland, achieved a new national record in the 100 meters, finishing in 10.08 seconds at the Be Fast Today Track Academy meeting in London’s Lee Valley Stadium on Saturday, according to The Irish Times.
This performance surpassed his previous Irish record of 10.12 seconds, set at the Stratford track meeting in London in the previous year. The run benefited from a tailwind of 2.0m/s, the maximum permitted.
Race Results and Season Challenges
Olatunde finished second in the race, with Britain’s Eugene Amo-Dadzie winning in 9.87 seconds. The Irish Times reported that the 23-year-old from Dundalk has faced a challenging season, including a hamstring strain that forced him to withdraw from the national track and field championships earlier in the month, despite qualifying for the 100m final.
prior to Saturday’s race, his season best was 10.23 seconds.
Looking ahead to Future Competitions
While the 10.08 second run is too late to qualify for the 2025 World Championships in tokyo, it does secure olatunde’s place in the 2026 European Athletics Championships in Birmingham. The Irish Times notes that this achievement brings him closer to his goal of breaking the 10-second barrier.
Olatunde also contributed to a national record in the men’s 4x100m relay team earlier this summer, with a time of 38.92 seconds in Geneva in June, which was then improved to 38.88 seconds at the European Athletics Team Championships in Maribor, Slovenia at the end of June.
training and Coaching
Olatunde spent the winter training in Florida with Olympic 100m champion Noah Lyles, under the guidance of coach Lance Brahman, as reported by The Irish Times.
