Israel has demanded residents of seven villages in southern Lebanon evacuate ahead of strikes against claimed Hezbollah targets, as the ceasefire in the region appears to be shattered.

The Israeli military issued evacuation orders for towns north of the Litani River, an area occupied by Israeli troops despite the ceasefire agreement. Large plumes of smoke were visible from northern Israel as the Israeli air force began bombardment of the towns and villages.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed his weekly cabinet meeting, stating that Hezbollah’s actions were disintegrating the ceasefire and that Israel was obligated to act for the security of its soldiers and communities. He said Israel was acting vigorously according to rules agreed upon with the United States and Lebanon, which he described as providing freedom of action to respond to attacks, thwart immediate threats, and neutralise emerging threats.

Netanyahu instructed Israeli forces to step up attacks on Hezbollah once peace talks were called off. The evacuation warning came after one of Israel’s soldiers was killed, prompting new evacuation orders for seven Lebanese towns beyond the buffer zone previously occupied by Israeli forces.

Hezbollah launched missiles and drones towards Israel in response to the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, which Lebanese government officials had urged the group not to do. Hezbollah claims its strikes are a legitimate act of self-defence.

The Israeli military said its strikes across Beirut and beyond have targeted Hezbollah, which entered the broader regional conflict two nights ago. Residents have been seen fleeing Lebanon’s capital on foot and by car following the strikes.

The federal government says there are around 115,000 Australians in the region, including more than 100 Defence Force personnel. Australians in Iran, Israel, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates are being urged to register with D-FAT.

It must be understood that Hezbollah’s violations are essentially disintegrating the ceasefire,” Mr Netanyahu said.”as far as we are concerned, what obligates us is the security of Israel, the security of our soldiers, and the security of our communities.”

We are acting vigorously according to the rules we agreed upon with the United States, and incidentally, with Lebanon as well — Which means freedom of action, not only to respond to attacks, which is obvious, but to thwart immediate threats and also to neutralise emerging threats.”

The ceasefire appears to be shattered as Israel demands residents evacuate some villages north of Lebanon’s Litani River. Israel claims there are Hezbollah targets in the area.
