The Israeli Navy stopped a vessel carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza, wiht the military stating it was bringing the ship to shore. The Israeli Foreign Ministry confirmed the action on X, formerly Twitter, early Sunday.
The group operating the ship, part of a coalition aiming to deliver aid, released a statement asserting that “All cargo was non-military, civilian and intended for direct distribution to a population facing deliberate starvation and medical collapse under Israel’s illegal blockade.”
This marks the second time in recent months that Israel has prevented a ship operated by this coalition from reaching Gaza. Food experts have repeatedly warned of the escalating risk of famine in the region due to the ongoing blockade.
Among those on board the seized vessel, named Madleen, were 12 activists. Notably, prominent climate activist Greta thunberg was among the activists on this ship when it was previously intercepted by the Israeli military in June.
The situation highlights the ongoing challenges in delivering essential supplies to Gaza, where the humanitarian crisis continues to deepen. The international community has expressed growing concern over the impact of the blockade on the civilian population.
