Tel Aviv Hostage Families Demand Action, Question Government Role

Thousands of people gathered in Tel Aviv on Saturday, June 28, at the “Place des Otages,” renewing calls for the release of 50 captives still held in Gaza.The demonstration, interrupted for two weeks due to the war in Iran, echoed the now-familiar chant: “NOW!” The hostages have been detained as the Hamas attack on Israeli territory on oct. 7, 2023.
Israeli authorities report that of the 50 captives, 20 are still alive (18 civilians and two soldiers, all men), 28 have died, and two others are presumed dead, having shown no signs of life.
The swift resolution claimed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the conflict with Iran has fueled frustration among the families. gil Dickmann, a prominent figure in the Families des Familles des Otages, questioned the government’s role. He said the main Israeli organization has been fighting for the release of their loved ones as the start.
“If we can stop a war against Iran in twelve days, why don’t we do it for the war in Gaza? This is the question that everyone is asking here,” Dickmann said.
Dickmann added that a year ago, they were optimistic, but many opportunities were lost for political reasons. He believes Netanyahu could have saved lives,including that of his cousin,Carmel Gat,who was killed by her captors and whose body remains in Gaza.
