Ceasefire and Hostage Returns
Hamas and Islamic Jihad’s armed wings had previously announced their intention to hand over the remains as part of the ceasefire agreement with Israel. Hamas stated the body was discovered in Khan Yunis, located in the southern Gaza Strip.
When the truce commenced on october 10, 2025, Hamas held 20 living hostages and the remains of 28 deceased captives. As then, all living hostages have been released, and Hamas had returned the remains of 24 deceased hostages prior to this latest transfer, fulfilling terms of the ceasefire.
In return for the release of hostages, Israel has released approximately 2,000 Palestinian prisoners held in its custody and returned the bodies of hundreds of deceased Palestinians.
Challenges and Accusations
Israel has accused hamas of deliberately delaying the return of the remains of deceased hostages. Hamas, in turn, attributes the slow pace to the extensive destruction in Gaza over the past two years of conflict, which has resulted in many bodies being buried under rubble. The ongoing conflict has substantially elaborate recovery efforts.
