The Indonesian government has announced the release of nine Indonesian citizens who were detained by the Israeli military while volunteering for the Global Sumud Flotilla 2.0. As of May 21, 2026, the volunteers have been officially freed and are currently in the process of returning home.
Foreign Minister RI Sugiono expressed gratitude regarding the release of the citizens. He specifically highlighted and appreciated the role played by Turkey in the diplomatic efforts to secure their freedom.
The detention occurred during the activities of the Global Sumud Flotilla 2.0. To ensure the safety and eventual release of the volunteers, the Indonesian government intensified its coordination efforts through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Directorate for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens.
In response to the detention of the nine citizens, the Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI) issued six “Taujihat,” or religious guidelines, to address the situation and provide direction to the community.
The diplomatic process coincided with broader efforts by Turkey to facilitate the repatriation of its own citizens who were also detained by Israel.
