Flotilla Interception and Activist Expulsion
On Saturday, September 28, 2024, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the expulsion of 137 pro-Palestinian activists to Turkey. This action followed the interception of the international “Global Sumud” flotilla as it attempted to reach Gaza. The interception occurred three days prior, on September 25, 2024, when the Israeli Navy stopped several dozen boats approaching the Gazan coastline.
The flotilla, which transported over 400 people including activists, political figures, and Swedish ecological activist Greta Thunberg, was presented by its organizers as a “peaceful” initiative. The stated aim was to “break the blockade of Gaza” and deliver humanitarian aid to a population facing what organizers described as “famine and genocide.”

Israel’s Justification and ongoing Conflict
Israel justified the interception of the boats citing security imperatives. This action occurs amidst a major military offensive in the Gaza Strip, which began following the October 7,2023,attack on Israel by Hamas. The offensive has been ongoing for nearly a year as of October 4, 2024.
Prior to the mass expulsion, four Italian activists were sent back to Italy on Friday, September 27, 2024.
Background: The Blockade of Gaza
The blockade of the Gaza Strip has been a contentious issue since 2007. Israel, along with Egypt, imposes restrictions on the movement of people and goods in and out of Gaza, citing security concerns related to Hamas, which controls the territory. Critics argue the blockade constitutes collective punishment of the Gazan population and exacerbates humanitarian conditions.
