Gaza, Palestine – A stark reality is unfolding in Gaza, where a critical shortage of food and essential medicines is leading to the preventable deaths of children. Global, a charity actively working on the ground in Gaza, has highlighted the dire situation, reporting that children are succumbing to starvation and lack of medical supplies, including vital IV fluids and therapeutic formulas.
The Human Cost of Blockades
The ongoing blockade and restrictions on aid entering Gaza have created a humanitarian catastrophe. The charity’s statement to NPR paints a grim picture: “Those children died becuase there is not enough food in Gaza and not enough medicines, including IV fluids and therapeutic formula, to revive them.” This underscores the immediate and devastating impact of these policies on the most vulnerable population.
Freedom Flotilla: A History of Resistance and Reprisals
The struggle to deliver aid to Gaza is not new, and the international community has faced significant challenges and pushback. In June, another humanitarian aid ship, part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, was intercepted by the Israeli military. Among those detained were prominent figures like climate activist Greta Thunberg and European Parliament member Rima Hassan.
Thunberg was deported the following day, while Hassan endured three days in Israeli custody, including a period in solitary confinement. These actions highlight the lengths to which authorities have gone to prevent aid from reaching Gaza.
Facing Down Obstacles: A Commitment to Humanity
Arraf, a human rights attorney involved with the Freedom Flotilla, spoke to Democracy Now on friday about the persistent efforts to thwart aid missions. “over the years,Israel has tried various methods to stop us,” Arraf stated. “It has been very violent, from attacking, beating, abducting, arresting, jailing and even killing our volunteers.”
Arraf recalled a especially tragic incident in 2010 when Israel killed 10 volunteers on a flotilla she was part of. Despite such severe repercussions, the commitment to delivering aid remains unwavering. “But that did not stop us. And it’s not going to stop us now,” she asserted, emphasizing the enduring spirit of humanitarian action in the face of adversity. The ongoing efforts of organizations like Global and the Freedom Flotilla Coalition are a testament to the urgent need for unimpeded humanitarian access to Gaza.
