Israel strikes cars on Lebanese highway, killing 8, including 2 children

At least eight people, including two children, were killed on May 13, 2026, after three Israeli drone strikes targeted vehicles on a major highway linking Beirut to southern Lebanon.

Lebanon’s Ministry of Health reported the casualties following the attacks, which took place in the Jiyeh area, approximately 20 kilometers south of the Lebanese capital.

Photographs shared by Lebanon’s National News Agency showed the targeted vehicles severely damaged, with exteriors that were torn apart and charred.

The strikes occurred amid an escalating conflict involving Hezbollah, which has been launching attacks against northern Israel and Israeli troops occupying sections of southern Lebanon.

Forced Displacement and Military Action

On May 13, 2026, the Israeli military issued forced displacement orders for residents of six southern Lebanese villages. The military warned it would soon act forcefully against the following locations:

• Meiss el-Jabal
• Yanouh
• Burj Shemali
• Hula
• Debl
• Aabbasiyyeh

Diplomatic Negotiations

The military strikes and displacement orders come as the United States brokers a new round of direct negotiations between Lebanon and Israel, which are expected to take place in Washington on May 14, 2026.

Hezbollah has stated that it opposes these negotiations in the United States.

Reporting from Tyre in southern Lebanon, Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr noted that the conflict is escalating and taking a high toll on civilians living in these areas.
