Israel Strikes Hezbollah Smuggling Sites, Tension Rises in Fragile Ceasefire
Israeli aircraft targeted Hezbollah weapon smuggling sites along the Syria-Lebanon border, according to the Israeli military. This attack occurred shortly after a ceasefire took effect, which ended months of fighting. The military claims the strikes were necessary due to ceasefire violations. There was no immediate response from Syrian officials or Hezbollah.
The ceasefire, brokered by the United States and France, aims for a two-month halt in hostilities. Hezbollah began its attacks on Israel on October 8, 2023, supporting Hamas after its assault on southern Israel a day earlier. The conflict escalated with heavy Israeli bombings, targeting Hezbollah leaders and assets.
In Gaza, Israeli strikes continue. A recent attack killed five people in a car, including three members of the food charity World Central Kitchen (WCK). The Israeli military stated the vehicle was linked to a militant involved in a recent Hamas attack but is investigating the connection to WCK.
In southern Lebanon, reports indicate some civilians returning home despite warnings from military forces. An Israeli drone attack in the village of Majdal Zoun injured three individuals, including a child.
The conflict has led to significant casualties on both sides. More than 3,760 people have died in Lebanon, mainly civilians. In Israel, over 70 people have died, including civilians and soldiers. In Gaza, retaliatory actions have resulted in over 44,000 Palestinian deaths, predominantly women and children.
As tensions remain high, Israel maintains the right to respond to perceived threats under the ceasefire terms, complicating the already fragile truce between the two sides.
