Updated June 15, 2025
Israel has confirmed it conducted an airstrike on Mashhad airport in northeastern Iran. The target was a military refueling aircraft, in what the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) described as its “longest-range strike conducted as the beginning of the operation.”
The IDF stated the strike hit an Iranian aerial refueling aircraft approximately 2,300 kilometers from Israel.Reports indicate a large fire erupted at the airport following the attack. Iranian media confirmed explosions and the activation of air defenses in Mashhad, home to the imam Reza shrine, a significant Shia Muslim site.
The operation is one of Israel’s farthest-reaching attacks, reminiscent of its 1985 strike on the Palestine Liberation Organization’s headquarters in Tunisia.
“The offensive operations we are conducting in Iran are transforming Israel’s strategic reality. We are removing an existential threat and reinforcing our security,” Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, Israeli Chief of Staff, said.
Zamir added that the IDF has “completed paving the way to Tehran” and is striking Iranian infrastructure and its nuclear program. He affirmed Israel’s commitment to acting with determination until all objectives are met.
According to Human Rights Activists, an organization based in Washington, Israeli strikes have reportedly killed at least 406 people and wounded 654 in Iran. Official casualty figures from Iran have not been released.
The campaign, which began Friday, has seen Israel target multiple Iranian military and nuclear sites, including oil refineries and defense facilities. Iran has responded with missile strikes, with at least 22 hitting Israeli territory, causing deaths and widespread damage.
