Ancient Roots Uprooted: Al-Moughayyir Farmers Face Devastation as Olive Trees are Bulldozed
Al-Moughayyir, West Bank – A sense of profound loss hangs heavy in the air of Al-Moughayyir, a village nestled in the heart of the West Bank. This week, the landscape, and the lives of its inhabitants, were irrevocably altered as hundreds of olive trees, some over 70 years old, were uprooted by bulldozers in the presence of the Israeli army.
The scene, witnessed by Agence france-Presse (AFP) journalists, paints a stark picture of devastation. Fields surrounding the village are now littered with the fallen trees, their roots exposed, a symbol of the deep connection severed between the Palestinian farmers and their land.
Abdelatif Mohamed Abou Aliya, a farmer from Al-Moughayyir, stands amidst the wreckage of his livelihood. He told AFP of losing olive trees that have been in his family for generations, trees he estimates to be over 70 years old, all wiped out from a hectare of his land. “They completely uprooted and shaved them, under false reasons,” he lamented, his voice filled with a mixture of grief and frustration.
Despite the immense loss, the spirit of resilience remains unbroken.Abou Aliya, along with other residents, has already begun the arduous task of replanting, a testament to their unwavering commitment to their land and heritage. On Sunday morning, villagers gathered, sharing water and determination as they worked to restore what was taken.
Kazem Al-Hajj Mouhammad, another Palestinian farmer, was photographed standing beside his uprooted olive trees, his face etched with sorrow. The image, captured by Majdi Mohammed of AP, serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of this destruction.
Adding insult to injury, residents report that the operation began on Thursday, accompanied by a wave of arrests. A Palestinian NGO dedicated to prisoner defense reported 14 arrests in Al-Moughayyir over the past three days.
Ghassan Abou Aliya, head of a local agricultural association, believes the uprooting is part of a larger strategy.”The objective is to control and force people to emigrate,” he stated, adding, “It’s the beginning, and it will extend to the whole West Bank.”
The Israeli army, when contacted by AFP, stated they were inquiring about the incident. However, on Friday, they released a press statement announcing the arrest of a man from Al-Moughayyir, alleging his involvement in a “terrorist attack” nearby. This incident follows the tragic death of an 18-year-old Palestinian, killed by the israeli army in Al-Moughayyir on August 16th, further escalating tensions in the region.
The uprooting of these olive trees is more than just an agricultural loss; it is a blow to the cultural identity and economic stability of Al-Moughayyir. These trees represent generations of Palestinian heritage, providing sustenance and a vital connection to the land. The community’s determination to replant is a powerful act of defiance, a symbol of their unwavering commitment to remain rooted in their ancestral home. The world watches, hoping that their efforts will bear fruit and that peace will one day blossom in this troubled land.
