Israel Strikes Yemen Airport After Missile Attack

December 31, 2024 Catherine Williams World

Israeli Airstrikes on Yemen Airport Spark International Condemnation

Sana’a, Yemen – tensions in the Middle East escalated dramatically Thursday as Israeli airstrikes targeted Sana’a International Airport, just hours after the airport was hit by a ballistic missile launched from Yemen. The strikes, confirmed by the Israeli military, caused significant damage and raised fears of potential casualties.

The Israeli military stated the airstrikes were a direct response to the missile attack and aimed at disrupting the Houthis’ ability to launch further attacks. The Houthis, a rebel group controlling much of northern yemen, claimed responsibility for the missile launch, citing it as retaliation for Israeli airstrikes on Yemen earlier this week.

“this is a risky escalation,” a UN spokesperson said, condemning the targeting of civilian infrastructure. “Targeting an active airport puts innocent lives at risk.”

Reports indicate a passenger jet carrying hundreds of people was landing at the airport when the Israeli airstrikes occured, raising concerns about potential civilian casualties.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions between israel and the Houthis. In recent weeks, Israel has carried out several airstrikes against Houthi targets in Yemen, accusing the group of supplying weapons to Hamas, the militant group controlling the Gaza Strip.

The Houthis deny these accusations but have vowed to continue their attacks against Israel.

The international community has expressed deep concern over the escalating violence. The United States, a close ally of israel, expressed support for Israel’s right to defend itself but urged all parties to de-escalate the situation.

The situation remains volatile, wiht the potential for further violence. The international community is closely monitoring the situation and calling for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

A conversation on the Brink

Sarah: Did you hear about the situation in Yemen? It sounds incredibly tense.

John: No, I haven’t. What happened?

Sarah: apparently, there were Israeli airstrikes on Sana’a International Airport. It truly seems like they were in response to a missile attack from Yemen earlier in the day.

John: Wow, that’s serious. Who launched the missile?

Sarah: It was allegedly launched by the Houthis, a rebel group battling the Yemeni government for control of the country.

John: So this is just the latest in a series of clashes? I know there’s been a lot of tension in the region.

Sarah: Exactly. Israel has carried out several airstrikes against Houthi targets in recent weeks, accusing them of supplying weapons to Hamas, the Palestinian militant group that controls Gaza.

John: The Houthis deny those accusations, obviously. What are the consequences of this latest attack?

sarah: The airstrikes caused serious damage to the airport. Reports say there was a passenger jet landing with hundreds of people on board when the strikes hit. Thankfully, there are no confirmed casualties yet, but it’s a terrifying situation.John: This sounds incredibly risky. What’s the international reaction been like?

Sarah: Not surprisingly, the international community is calling for restraint. The UN has condemned the attacks, especially targeting civilian infrastructure like an active airport. They’ve expressed serious concerns about the potential for civilian casualties.

John: It sounds like a very volatile situation. What happens next?

Sarah: It’s really uncertain. Both sides are digging in, and the potential for further violence is very real. The international community is urging both sides to de-escalate, but it remains to be seen if they’ll listen.
