GENEVA (AP) — A group of more than 30 independent United Nations experts issued a stark warning Wednesday, urging immediate action to prevent the “annihilation” of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
In a press release, the experts, mandated by the UN Human Rights Council, called on states to “act quickly to put an end to the current genocide, dismantle apartheid and ensure a future in which Palestinians and israelis will coexist in freedom and dignity.” The experts do not speak on behalf of the United Nations itself.
The experts framed the situation as a critical juncture, stating that nations face a clear choice: “stay passive and witness the massacre of innocent [people] or participate in the development of a fair resolution.”
They described the escalating violence in Gaza as ”a moral turning point,” imploring states to intervene to halt the violence or risk becoming witnesses to the annihilation of the Palestinian population. They called for immediate international intervention in the territory.
Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur for the occupied Palestinian territories, was among the experts who questioned the international community’s response. “The world looks. Will member states respect their obligations and will they intervene to stop the massacre, hunger and illnesses,as well as other war crimes and crimes against humanity which are perpetrated daily with impunity?” they asked.
The experts criticized the ongoing debate over whether the situation constitutes genocide, stating, “While states debate terminology—is it or is it not a genocide?—, Israel continues its relentless destruction of life in Gaza, by land, air and sea attacks, moving and massacring with impunity the population which survives.”
