Israel Tightens Ties with Australia Amidst Diplomatic Strain
Diplomatic Row escalates: Israel Retaliates After Australian Visa Ban
A diplomatic dispute between Israel and Australia has intensified after Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon sa’ar revoked the residency visas of Australian representatives to the Palestinian Authority. This action follows Australia’s decision to bar far-right Israeli lawmaker Simcha Rothman from entering the country.
Australia justified the visa cancellation, stating Rothman’s presence could incite division and threaten the safety of its citizens. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke emphasized Australia’s commitment to ensuring a safe environment for all, suggesting Rothman’s views were incompatible wiht this goal. rothman himself claimed Australia succumbed to “Islamist jihadists” and “surrendered to terror” by canceling his visa.
Sa’ar accused Australia of fueling antisemitism and announced a review of all official Australian visa applications to Israel. He linked the decision to Australia’s recent recognition of a Palestinian state and previous visa denials to Israeli figures like Ayelet shaked. Sa’ar stated Australia was “acting against Israel, Australia is persecuting Israel.”
The Australian government has recently adopted a more critical stance towards Israel, announcing plans to recognize a Palestinian state contingent on reforms within the palestinian Authority and guarantees regarding Hamas‘s role. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese reiterated Australia’s support for a two-state solution, emphasizing the need for Israel’s security through regional recognition and an end to the cycle of violence.
Israel has condemned the international recognition of a palestinian state as a “reward for terror.” Rothman was scheduled to visit Jewish schools and synagogues and meet with victims of antisemitic attacks during his now-canceled trip.
