Gaza Conflict Escalates Amid Troop Shortage, Aid Crisis

Updated June 7, 2025
‍

Gaza’s civil defense agency reported that Israeli strikes killed at‌ least 38 people in Gaza on friday, ⁤as Palestinians observed Eid al-Adha. The Israeli military has not yet commented on the strikes.

The strikes occurred as the humanitarian situation in Gaza worsens, with severe shortages of food and essential supplies. A controversial program recently eased a more than two-month Israeli blockade on aid.

In Israel, military spokesman Effie Defrin reported that four soldiers died and five others were wounded in Khan Yunis. According to Defrin, the soldiers “were operating in the Khan Yunis area, in a compound belonging to the Hamas terrorist association” when⁤ an ⁤explosive device detonated, causing‍ a structure to ⁢collapse.

Abu Obeida, spokesman for Hamas’ Ezzedine‍ al-Qassam Brigades, said the Khan ‍Younis losses “illustrate what the occupation forces will face wherever they are present.” ⁤He urged the Israeli ⁣public to “force it’s leaders to end the war of extermination or prepare to⁤ receive more of its sons‌ in coffins.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu offered condolences to the soldiers’ ⁤families, stating they “sacrificed their lives for the safety‌ of‌ all of‍ us.” The deaths bring the total number of Israeli soldiers killed in Gaza since the⁣ ground⁢ offensive began in late October 2023 to 429, according to Agence France-Presse.

The renewed Gaza campaign coincides ⁤with a dispute ⁣over ultra-Orthodox conscription, threatening⁣ Netanyahu’s coalition. Ultra-Orthodox parties‍ have threatened to withdraw support if Netanyahu does not codify their military exemption into law. Public opposition to the exemption has grown due to the strain on reservists’ families.

Defrin called the conscription “the need of the moment, an operational necessity,” noting the army is short approximately 10,000 soldiers, including 6,000 in combat ⁢roles. “Tens of thousands more notices will be issued in the upcoming draft cycle,” he added.

Netanyahu’s office announced “significant ⁤progress” after a meeting with⁢ a lawmaker pushing for‌ increased ultra-orthodox enlistment and ‍stricter sanctions ⁣for refusal. “Unresolved ⁤issues” remain to be addressed.

Netanyahu also faces scrutiny for allegedly supporting an armed group‌ in Gaza that opposes Hamas. Knesset member Avigdor Liberman claimed the government, under Netanyahu’s direction, was “giving weapons to a group of criminals and felons.” The European Council on Foreign Relations describes the group as a “criminal ‍gang ‍operating in the Rafah area⁢ that is widely accused of looting aid‍ trucks.”

eid ⁢al-Adha celebrations were overshadowed ‍by halted aid distribution. The U.S. and ⁤Israeli-backed Gaza humanitarian ⁢Foundation (GHF) cited overcrowding as making operations unsafe. The GHF initially announced ⁣distribution site closures, then reported food ⁣distribution, before citing safety concerns and closing ⁣its gates.

The GHF stated, ⁢”The distribution was conducted peacefully and without incident; however, it was paused due to excessive crowding‌ that made it unsafe to proceed.”

Food shortages have severely impacted Eid al-adha celebrations for gazans. Suad al-Qarra,speaking from Nasser Hospital, recounted the death ⁤of her son⁤ in an explosion as ⁢he prepared to wear new clothes⁢ for the holiday. “He whent to get dressed and there was an explosion,” she ‌said. “I⁤ took him to the hospital and (they) found him dead…I bought him‍ Eid clothes yesterday and he didn’t ‌wear them, instead he ‌wears a white shroud.”

hamas’ 2023 attack on ⁤Israel ‍resulted in 1,218 deaths, ⁢mostly civilians.Since Israel resumed its offensive on March 18, at least 4,402 people have been⁤ killed, bringing the war’s overall toll to 54,677, mostly civilians, according to the Gaza health ⁣ministry.

the United Nations has warned that most of ⁣Gaza’s 2.3 ⁣million residents ⁢are ⁣at risk of famine, with acute malnutrition rates among young children nearly tripling. The International Criminal Court (ICC) is investigating alleged war crimes committed by both Israel and Hamas as 2014 and has issued ⁢arrest warrants for Netanyahu⁣ and ⁢his former defense ⁣chief.

What’s next

The situation remains volatile, with continued military actions and humanitarian crises.Future developments hinge on diplomatic efforts, aid distribution, and resolution of the conscription debate in Israel.
