Madrid, Spain – September 14, 2024 – The Vuelta a España cycling race was halted on Saturday after protesters breached security perimeters to demonstrate against the participation of the Israel Cycling team – Premier Tech. The protests, organized under the slogan “By genocidal, Israel out of the return,” took place as cyclists were nearing the finish line in Madrid.
Protest Disrupts Race Route
Despite a significant police presence deployed throughout the Spanish capital, protesters successfully bypassed security measures and occupied sections of the race route, effectively blocking the tour.According to reports, the protesters targeted the route anticipating the cyclists’ arrival at the Plaza de Cibeles, the planned finish line, around 19:00 Spanish time (17:00 GMT). El Nacional first reported the disruption.
Following discussions with race officials, a decision was made to definitively stop the vuelta. Cyclists were left on the course and later escorted by police to their team vehicles or hotels.
Protestors’ Motivation and Context
The demonstration was organized in response to the ongoing israeli military offensive in the Gaza strip, which began following the October 7, 2023, attacks by Hamas. Protesters are calling for Israel’s exclusion from international sporting events.
