Israeli Army Recovers Body of Hostage in Gaza Strip
Israeli Soldier’s Remains Returned After Hamas Captivity
Jerusalem, Israel – The Israeli Defense forces (IDF) announced Wednesday the recovery of the remains of Itay Svirsky, a soldier taken hostage by Hamas on October 7, 2023, and subsequently killed in captivity.
The Families Forum, representing families of those held captive by Hamas, released a statement saying the return of Svirsky’s body “provides crucial closure for his family, allowing for a proper burial in Israel.” The family has been notified.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed the recovery, stating that Svirsky’s remains were retrieved in a special operation and expressing gratitude to the Israeli security forces.”Our hearts are broken for the Svirsky family’s immense loss,” Netanyahu said.
Earlier this year, the IDF confirmed Svirsky’s death in captivity at the hands of Hamas terrorists.
Svirsky, 38, was visiting his parents at their Kibbutz Be’eri home during the October 7th weekend when Hamas militants launched a deadly attack on the community. Svirsky was taken hostage, and his parents were killed during the assault.
During his captivity in Gaza, he was held alongside hostages Yossi Sharabi and noa Argamani. Sharabi is believed to have died accidentally during an IDF strike, according to the army’s earlier statement, while Argamani was rescued over the summer.
This recovery coincides with the IDF’s release of an investigation into the deaths of six hostages due to Israeli military pressure in Gaza. The IDF investigation concluded that the six hostages were likely executed by their captors during an IDF airstrike targeting a Hamas tunnel near their location. The IDF stated in its investigation that they were unaware of the hostages’ proximity to the tunnel at the time of the strike.
Osnat Peri, speaking to Channel 12,stated,”Military pressure does not help bring hostages home; worse,it kills hostages.” She claims that 28 hostages have been killed as a result of IDF operations.
