Israeli forces carried out a devastating bombardment across Lebanon on April 8, 2026, resulting in hundreds of deaths. The strikes occurred hours after the announcement of a two-week ceasefire in the war between the United States and Iran.
The Lebanese Ministry of Health reported that at least 203 people were killed and 1,000 others wounded in air strikes that targeted several regions, including Beirut, the Bekaa Valley, Mount Lebanon, and Sidon, as well as various villages in southern Lebanon. Other figures provided by the country’s Civil Defence placed the death toll at over 250, while NBC News reported that more than 300 people were killed during the assault.
Scale of the Military Operation
The Israeli military described the operation as its largest coordinated assault on Lebanon since it began a new military operation in the country on March 2, 2026. According to the military, the strikes targeted more than 100 Hezbollah command centres and military sites.
In Beirut, the attacks caused significant devastation, particularly in the Tallet al-Khayyat neighbourhood. On April 9, 2026, Israel announced that the wave of attacks had also killed an aide to Hezbollah chief Naim Qassem.
Dispute Over Ceasefire Scope
The violence has triggered a diplomatic dispute over the scope of the two-week US-Iran ceasefire. Pakistan, whose government helped broker the deal, maintains that the agreement included a halt to attacks on all fronts, specifically mentioning Lebanon.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated that the ceasefire was intended to stop hostilities across the region, where Israel has been targeting the Iran-backed group Hezbollah.
However, the United States and Israel dispute this interpretation. US President Donald Trump stated that the Israeli attacks on Lebanon were separate
and that the country was not part of the agreement. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also asserted that Lebanon was not included in the truce.
The disagreement has raised concerns that the ceasefire could unravel before negotiations for a permanent settlement begin. Those talks are scheduled to commence in Islamabad on April 11, 2026.
Regarding the stability of the truce, JD Vance suggested that Iran would be dumb
to allow the talks to collapse over the situation in Lebanon.
Humanitarian Impact
The scale of the bombardment placed immense pressure on Lebanon’s healthcare infrastructure. Elias Chlela, the head of Lebanon’s syndicate of doctors, issued an urgent call for physicians of all specialties to report to any available hospital to provide aid. One of the largest hospitals in Beirut reported a critical need for donations of all blood types.
Adam Nsouli, a 25-year-old nurse at the American University Hospital in Beirut, described the scene to NBC News as involving smoke, fire, and the screams of victims. He reported that the hospital received dead and rescued individuals throughout the night, including traumatized infants who arrived without their parents.
The April 8 strikes represent a sudden intensification of a military campaign that has already killed nearly 2,000 people and displaced more than one million individuals in Lebanon.
