More than 100 Israeli settlers attacked Palestinians and Israeli soldiers in the West Bank on September 28, 2026, after the military attempted to return a displaced Palestinian family to their home under a Supreme Court order. The violent confrontation in the village of Jalud involved settlers setting fire to Palestinian homes and wounding three Israeli border police officers, according to a military statement reported by The New York Times.
Supreme Court Order and Military Action in Jalud
The confrontation began when the Israeli military moved to reinstate the Toubassi family to their property in Jalud, located north of Ramallah. The family had fled their home in July following repeated settler attacks. Earlier in September, the Israeli Supreme Court ordered the military to ensure the family’s safe return after settlers took over the residence. Under international law, Israel functions as an occupying power in the West Bank, making the military responsible for maintaining law and order and protecting Palestinian residents. Israeli courts recognize this legal principle. Following the latest violence, the Israeli police stated that three individuals were arrested and an investigation into the attacks had been opened.
Criticism Over Authority Response to Settler Attacks
The Israeli government, military, and police face international criticism and condemnation for failing to protect Palestinians in the occupied territory. Documentation and local reports highlight a surge of settler attacks that have resulted in few arrests. Prior to the September operation, the Israeli military announced in August that it had established a closed zone around the area to prevent nonresidents from entering. However, Palestinians documented soldiers standing by while settlers moved freely in and out of the Toubassi house, with some soldiers even filmed playing ball with settlers in the yard. According to the Supreme Court decision, the military removed those soldiers from combat duty.
