Tel Aviv, Israel – A fervent desire to resettle Gaza, fueled by religious conviction and a belief in an indivisible Land of Israel, is gaining momentum among some Israelis, even as the territory remains a scene of devastation. On July 30, hundreds of supporters marched towards the Gaza border, a poignant presentation of a movement advocating for a return to the settlements evacuated in 2005.
Echoes of Gush Katif: A Call for Re-establishment
The sentiment driving this movement was powerfully articulated by one speaker at the rally, who declared, ”We didn’t sacrifice all this to transfer Gaza from one Arab to another Arab. gaza is an inseparable part of the land of Israel.” This outlook underscores a core tenet of the movement: that Gaza rightfully belongs to Israel and should be repopulated by Jewish settlers.
The speaker further elaborated on the aspirations for a renewed presence in Gaza, stating, “I don’t want to go back to Gush Katif – it’s too small. It needs to be much bigger. Gaza today allows us to think a little bigger.” This ambition reflects a vision not merely of returning to the past, but of expanding Israeli presence and control in the region.
Faith and Land: The Settler’s Perspective
The marchers, a diverse group including families and individuals from settlements across the occupied West Bank, expressed unwavering faith in their cause and in the Israeli government’s potential to facilitate their return.Ms.Sharon Emouna, 58, who traveled from her West bank settlement to participate, shared her conviction: “I have faith in God and in the government.”
Her sentiment was echoed by others who believe in the divine promise of the land. “I’m just here in support, to say that the land of Israel is promised to the Jewish people and it’s our right to settle there,” Ms. Emouna stated. This belief system forms the bedrock of their claim to the territory.
Regarding the future of the Palestinian population in Gaza, Ms. Emouna suggested that any remaining Palestinians would benefit from living alongside Israeli settlers, a perspective that highlights the deep ideological divide surrounding the future of the region.
Border blockade: A Glimpse of the past and Future
Despite the passionate advocacy, the marchers were ultimately prevented from reaching Gaza by Israeli soldiers. The final approach to the border was met with a blockade, leaving participants to observe the stark reality of the territory from a distance. Families approached the border, close enough to witness the “apocalyptic silhouette of smashed Palestinian homes left by the fighting.” This scene served as a somber reminder of the recent conflict and the complex challenges that lie ahead for Gaza and its inhabitants, while concurrently fueling the hopes of those who envision it as their future home. The movement’s aspirations, though currently unmet, signal a persistent and deeply held belief among a segment of Israeli society regarding the territorial integrity and future settlement of Gaza.
