The chief military prosecutor in Israel dropped charges against five reserve soldiers accused of severe abuse against a Palestinian detainee at the Sde Teiman military prison, according to reporting by the German media outlet Zeit Online.
Military Prosecutor Drops Sde Teiman Abuse Case
Itai Ofir ordered the dismissal of the case. He based the decision partly on the fact that the alleged victim was released to Gaza in October 2025 during an exchange of Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners, rendering the man unavailable for trial proceedings.
Leaked Footage Exposed Severe Injuries
According to Zeit Online, the case originated from a leaked security camera video broadcast by Israeli television channel Channel 12 in August 2024. The footage shows several soldiers shielding an area where a Palestinian prisoner lay on the ground surrounded by dozens of other bound detainees.
Medical reports cited by Zeit Online indicate the victim sustained broken ribs, a torn lung, and a torn rectum during the incident.
Netanyahu Backs Dismissal Amid National Debate
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu supported the decision to drop the charges. Netanyahu stated that the state of Israel must pursue its enemies rather than its heroic soldiers, as reported by Zeit Online.
The dismissal has renewed public debate over the independence of Israel’s judiciary under the current right-wing government. Critics question how transparently the military can investigate internal misconduct when leadership focuses heavily on shielding personnel from legal accountability.
Resignation of the Former Advocate General
Former chief military prosecutor Yifat Tomer-Jeruschalmi originally filed charges against five soldiers in February 2025 for aggravated abuse and assault.
Tomer-Jeruschalmi resigned in October 2025 after taking responsibility for leaking the surveillance video to the public. In her resignation letter, published in part by Israeli media, she stated that the military holds a duty to investigate credible allegations of violence against detainees. She wrote that she authorized the material release to counteract false propaganda against military law enforcement agencies.
Search Operations and Leadership Succession
Following her resignation, Tomer-Jeruschalmi was briefly reported missing before search teams located her on a beach near Herzlija. Authorities took her into custody amid concerns regarding potential suicide risk, though questions remain publicly regarding whether the measure stemmed from safety concerns or political pressure from within authorities.
Itai Ofir subsequently succeeded her and moved to drop the case against the five accused reservists.
