Israeli Strikes Gaza Casualties – Palestinian Deaths
Starmer’s Palestine Pledge Sparks Outrage from Netanyahu and Trump
London, UK – british Labor leader Keir Starmer’s conditional pledge to recognize a Palestinian state has ignited a strong backlash from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former US President Donald Trump, who argue such a move would reward Hamas and embolden terrorism.
Starmer’s Stance on Palestinian Statehood
On Tuesday, Keir starmer outlined a scenario where the UK would recognize the state of Palestine. This recognition would be contingent upon Israel taking “substantive steps to end the appalling situation in gaza.” These steps include agreeing to a ceasefire, committing to a pathway for peace that revitalizes the prospect of a two-state solution, and unequivocally stating there will be no annexations in the West Bank.
Netanyahu and Trump Condemn Starmer’s Position
The Labour leader’s statement drew immediate and sharp criticism from Israeli leadership. Prime Minister Netanyahu took to X (formerly Twitter) to denounce Starmer’s pledge, stating, “Starmer rewards Hamas’s monstrous terrorism & punishes its victims.” He further warned, “A jihadist state on Israel’s border TODAY will threaten Britain TOMORROW. Appeasement towards jihadist terrorists always fails. It will fail you too. It will not happen.”
Former President Donald Trump echoed these sentiments when questioned by journalists. “You’re rewarding Hamas if you do that,” Trump stated, aligning himself with Netanyahu’s criticism.
Gaza casualty Figures and International Scrutiny
The controversy unfolds against the backdrop of the ongoing conflict in Gaza. According to Gaza’s health ministry, which operates under the Hamas government, Israel’s retaliatory offensive has resulted in the deaths of over 60,000 Palestinians. the ministry’s figures do not differentiate between militants and civilians. Despite the operational control of Hamas, the United Nations and other international organizations consider the ministry’s data the most reliable source for casualty figures in the region.
Israel Considers Annexation as Pressure Tactic
Meanwhile, an Israeli minister suggested on Wednesday that Israel might consider annexing parts of Gaza as a means to exert greater pressure on Hamas. Zeev Elkin, a member of the security cabinet, told public broadcaster Kan that Israel could present Hamas with an ultimatum to reach a deal before further military actions are expanded. Elkin posited that “The most painful thing for our enemy is losing lands,” and that clarifying to Hamas that “the moment they play games with us they will lose land that they will never get back would be a significant pressure tool.” This statement indicates a potential shift in Israeli strategy, exploring territorial leverage in negotiations.
