Israeli Airstrike Kills Four Near Lebanon-Syria Border
– An Israeli drone strike in eastern Lebanon killed four people on Sunday, Lebanese state media reported. The attack targeted a vehicle near the Syrian border in the town of Majdal Anjar, according to the National News Agency.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed carrying out the airstrike, stating it targeted members of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror group. While Israeli strikes in Lebanon frequently target Hezbollah operatives, attacks on Islamic Jihad are less common, according to the IDF.
Lebanon’s health ministry also confirmed the death toll. Majdal Anjar is located in the Beqaa Valley, approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of the Israeli border and along a route connecting Damascus and Beirut.
According to IDF assessments, approximately 2,400 members of Hezbollah’s Radwan force, along with another 500 Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorists trained by Radwan, were positioned in southern Lebanon villages in anticipation of potential attacks against Israel following the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led assault from Gaza.
The strike comes amid ongoing tensions in the region. On , Israel bombed four Syria-Lebanon border crossings, claiming they were used by Hezbollah to smuggle weapons. That action followed earlier strikes on southern Lebanon that wounded at least 19 people in the town of Qanarit, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned the recent Israeli actions as a “policy of systematic aggression” and a violation of the US-brokered ceasefire that ended more than a year of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in 2024. President Aoun stated that the repeated attacks demonstrate Israel’s “refusal to abide by its obligations arising from the cessation of hostilities agreement.”
Islamic Jihad participated in the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel alongside Hamas and has been involved in numerous attacks on Israel from Lebanon in conjunction with Hezbollah.
