Israeli Strikes Target WCK Aid Workers Amid Ongoing Gaza Violence and Fragile Ceasefire
The Israeli military reported that an alleged attacker on October 7 had worked with World Central Kitchen (WCK). They requested clarification from international officials and WCK about this connection.
Violence in Gaza continued, even as a cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah seemed to hold. Despite some incidents testing the cease-fire’s stability, Israel targeted Hezbollah weapon smuggling sites along the Syria-Lebanon border.
Aid agencies described the efforts to deliver assistance in Gaza as dangerous. The ongoing war has created a humanitarian crisis, displacing most of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents and leading to widespread hunger. World Central Kitchen provides meals to those affected by disasters and conflicts, often serving as a vital resource.
Palestinian health official Muneer Alboursh confirmed that a recent strike killed three WCK workers. An anonymous aid worker in Gaza backed this account. At Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, personal belongings of the victims, including WCK-emblazoned items, were found scattered.
Nazmi Ahmed, the nephew of one of the victims, stated his relative was targeted while driving to work. Previous strikes on WCK aid convoys had killed seven workers in April and another in August.
Another Israeli airstrike killed 13 people, including children, in Khan Younis as they awaited aid distribution. Many residents have suffered during the ongoing violence.
Efforts for a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas have repeatedly failed. However, a U.S. and France-brokered deal with Lebanon appears to be in effect after being established.
On Saturday, Israeli forces struck sites used for smuggling weapons, claiming a violation of the cease-fire. There was no comment from Syrian authorities or Hezbollah regarding this. Strikes on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon have occurred since establishing the truce.
In Lebanon, Israeli drone attacks killed two people in the village of Rub Thalatheen. They also targeted a car in Majdal Zoun, wounding three others, including a child.
Israel’s military stated it reserves the right to respond to perceived violations. Thousands of Israelis remain displaced after the intense conflict with Hezbollah began following Hamas’ October 7 attack.
Reports indicate more than 3,760 deaths in Lebanon from Israeli actions, predominantly among civilians. The conflict has also caused significant casualties in Israel and Gaza, with numerous fatalities among both civilians and soldiers.
