For five nights ending in mid-August 2026, Israeli settlers surrounded three Palestinian homes on the outskirts of Qusra in the occupied West Bank, trapping families inside while cutting essential water and electricity supplies, according to reports by the Associated Press.

The Siege and Humanitarian Conditions in Qusra

Qusai Abu Rida remained trapped inside one of the targeted properties alongside his teenage son as dozens of settlers erected tents directly outside their doors. According to the Associated Press, the occupants were forced to rely on well water after utility lines were severed, while a Palestinian American brother living in Ohio watched the standoff unfold through home security cameras.

Loui Ridi, the homeowner in Ohio, stated that Israeli forces intervened multiple times during the standoff, but settlers consistently returned to the perimeter after moving only short distances. Rights organizations have repeatedly accused the military of failing to permanently halt settler violence or of acting to protect the settlers.

Military Intervention and International Reactions

On Tuesday, Israel’s military condemned the blockade as illegal, reprehensible, and unacceptable, subsequently declaring Qusra a closed military zone. Despite the designation, settlers returned the following day to block roads with rocks and clash with soldiers, as documented in video footage captured by local residents.

On Thursday, troops dismantled two illegal outposts in Qusra and an adjacent village, detaining one Israeli citizen and deploying additional patrols to the area. Qusai Abu Rida reported that soldiers gave occupants of the affected houses thirty minutes to evacuate and consolidate into a single structure, though families have not yet returned.

On Thursday, U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee publicly labeled the participating settlers as terrorists, utilizing terminology typically reserved for Palestinian militants in a notably severe rebuke from the United States administration.

Broader West Bank Settlement Expansion

The standoff coincides with a broader surge in settlement construction across the West Bank under the government led by Benjamin Netanyahu. Ministers maintain that the territory represents the biblical and historical homeland of the Jewish people and strongly oppose the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Cabinet members celebrated the rebuilding of a previously dismantled settlement elsewhere in the West Bank. The era of withdrawals and expulsions has ended. The era of construction and Zionism begins, Defense Minister Israel Katz stated at the ceremony.
