Israelis Reassess Security Role After Iran Strikes
updated June 19, 2025
Many Israelis initially ignored the early morning sirens, accustomed to previous campaigns that had diminished the rocket capabilities of Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah along the northern border. The prospect of a major attack was not immediatly apparent.
The recent missile strikes from Iran have prompted Israelis to reassess their security role and the nature of threats they face. The destructive power of Iran’s missiles has instilled a sense of vulnerability, a stark contrast to the perception of threats from Palestinian militants and Hezbollah fighters.
“I was preparing food for the Sabbath on Friday morning…and I turned on the radio and was shocked,” saeid Rivka Benayim, a Jerusalem supermarket cashier, noting shortages of essential goods. “I had no idea we were at war with Iran.”
Shlomo Alkobi, 25, an essential worker at a cellphone service center, drew a sharp distinction between the sources of attacks. “Hamas fired rockets made out of traffic sign poles,” Alkobi said. “Those are like kindergarten games compared to iran’s ballistic missiles.”
What’s next
Israelis are likely to demand increased security measures and a revised strategy for dealing with potential threats from Iran and its proxies in the region.
