A Bold Vision from Germany
In the early 1990s, German engineer Eugen Enge launched Isdera, aiming to create a supercar that rivaled the established Italian marques like Ferrari and Lamborghini. The result was the Commendatore, a strikingly designed vehicle that combined a relatively affordable BMW chassis with a powerful Mercedes-Benz V12 engine. Isdera, founded in 1981, initially focused on modifying Mercedes-Benz vehicles before embarking on this ambitious project.
The BMW Foundation and Mercedes Power
The Commendatore’s foundation was a BMW 6 Series chassis – specifically, the E30 generation – chosen for its relative affordability and readily available parts. Though, the heart of the Commendatore was a 6.0-liter Mercedes-Benz M120 V12 engine, originally intended for the Mercedes-Benz 700SL. This engine, producing around 408 horsepower, was a notable upgrade over anything BMW offered in that class at the time. The M120 engine was known for its robust construction and smooth power delivery.
Unique Design and Engineering
The Commendatore wasn’t just about engine swaps. It featured a completely custom-built body crafted from aluminum, giving it a distinctive and aggressive appearance. Notable design elements included gullwing doors, a rear wing, and a low-slung profile. The car’s construction and design were heavily influenced by the Mercedes-Benz C111 experimental supercar of the 1970s, a vehicle Isdera’s founder, Eugen Enge, had previously worked on while at Mercedes-Benz.
Beyond the aesthetics, the Commendatore incorporated advanced engineering for its time. It boasted a refined suspension system and powerful brakes to handle the V12’s output. the interior was luxurious, featuring high-quality materials and a driver-focused layout.
Limited Production and Legacy
Production of the Isdera Commendatore was extremely limited. Only around 13 examples were built between 1993 and 1996, making it a rare and highly sought-after vehicle today. The high cost of production, estimated at around 800,000 Deutsche Marks (approximately $450,000 USD at the time), contributed to its limited run.
Despite its rarity, the Commendatore remains a fascinating example of 1990s automotive engineering. It demonstrated the potential of combining German precision with Italian flair, and it stands as a testament to the vision of Eugen Enge. While it didn’t achieve mainstream success, the Isdera Commendatore has earned a dedicated following among automotive enthusiasts and collectors.
