The Tragedy in Crans-Montana
A devastating fire on New Year’s Eve in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, claimed the lives of six young Italians: Achille Barosi, Chiara Costanzo, Giovanni Tamburi, Emanuele Galeppini, Riccardo Minghetti, and Sofia Prosperi.The tragedy has deeply affected Italy, prompting a national outpouring of grief and support for the families of the victims.
The fire occurred in a chalet where the young Italians were vacationing. The exact cause of the fire is still under inquiry, but initial reports suggest it may have been started by fireworks.
Repatriation of the Victims
The bodies of five of the six Italian victims – Achille, Chiara, Giovanni, Emanuele, and Riccardo – were repatriated to Italy on a state flight. Sofia Prosperi, who resides in Lugano, Switzerland, was not on the flight.
Emotional scenes unfolded at the military airports of Linate and Ciampino as relatives and dignitaries gathered to receive the coffins.President of the Senate, Ignazio La Russa, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, Sports Minister Andrea Abodi, and Head of Civil Protection Fabio Ciciliano were among those present to pay their respects.
Upon arrival at Linate, a somber silence fell as the coffins of Achille Barosi, Chiara Costanzo, Giovanni Tamburi, and Emanuele Galeppini were unloaded. The coffins, crafted from light wood, were transferred to hearses and blessed by a priest before departing for their respective cities.
A separate flight then carried Riccardo Minghetti’s coffin to Ciampino airport, where his family gathered to receive him.
National Mourning and Remembrance
The Swiss Confederation has declared January 9th as a national day of mourning, with an international dimension, to remember all victims of the Crans-Montana tragedy. President Sergio Mattarella of Italy is expected to attend the memorial ceremony in Switzerland on January 9th.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has called for a moment of “national unity” in Italy, organizing a mass to be held on Friday afternoon in the Basilica of saints Ambrogio and Charles in rome. The Prime Minister extended her condolences to the families, acknowledging their pain and praising their dignity and strength.
Prime Minister Meloni personally contacted Carla Masiello, the mother of giovanni Tamburi, offering her support and sympathy. Masiello described the Prime Minister’s gesture as a heartfelt connection “from mother to mother, from heart to heart.”
