Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni conducted a surprise two-day visit to the Gulf region beginning April 3, 2026, to secure energy supplies and discuss regional stability. The visit included meetings with the leaders of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar, focusing on the impact of ongoing regional conflicts on European energy security.
In Jeddah, Prime Minister Meloni met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The discussions between the two leaders centered on bilateral relations, regional developments, and global economic stability. According to Italian government officials, Italy aims to strengthen its strategic cooperation with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and other Gulf partners.
Regional Security and Conflict in Iran
The diplomatic mission occurs during the fifth week of the US-Israeli war on Iran. The conflict has seen Iran target critical infrastructure within the Gulf region, leading to significant volatility in international markets. In response to these threats, Italy has deployed aerial defenses to the region to assist in protecting critical infrastructure against Iranian strikes.
Italian officials indicated that the Prime Minister’s visit was also intended to offer support to Gulf nations currently targeted by Iran. The security environment remains unstable, with Washington and Tehran exchanging threats and issuing contradictory messages regarding the progress of negotiations to end the hostilities.
Energy Security and Economic Impact
Energy security is a primary driver for the visit, as approximately 12 per cent of Italy’s energy imports are sourced from the Middle East. The disruption of markets caused by the war on Iran has severely affected net energy importers, prompting Italy to implement domestic measures to shield consumers and businesses from rising costs.
Finance Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti announced that Italy has extended fuel tax cuts until May 1, 2026. This measure involves the commitment of approximately €500 million ($577 million) in additional funds. Consumers and businesses will continue to receive a €0.25-per-litre reduction in taxes at the pump
throughout this period. This extension replaces a similar measure that was scheduled to expire on April 7.
The economic relationship between Italy and Saudi Arabia remains significant, with Italy ranking as one of the top 10 European trading partners for the Kingdom. Italy currently maintains its position as the fourth-largest economy in Europe.
Diplomatic Concerns in Lebanon
Beyond the immediate conflict with Iran, Italy and France have issued a joint warning regarding a grave crisis in Lebanon
. The two European nations highlighted the increasing risks facing the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the southern part of the country.
This warning follows a security incident in which three Indonesian personnel were killed in explosions, further complicating the stability of the region and the safety of international peacekeeping forces.
Prime Minister Meloni departed Jeddah following the conclusion of her meetings in the Kingdom as part of her broader Gulf tour.
