Milan, Italy – Italian stocks traded lower on Monday, with teh FTSE MIB index down 0.46% to 34,729 points in afternoon trading. The broader FTSE Italia All Share index also slipped, losing 0.47%.
The decline comes as investors digest news of UniCredit’s ongoing bid for BancoBPM. Shares of UniCredit dipped slightly, down 0.18% to €38.86, after the bank filed its offer document with the Italian securities regulator, Consob. The offer targets all outstanding shares of BancoBPM, which saw its stock price rise 1.25% to €7.944.
“UniCredit’s move signals a significant consolidation in the Italian banking sector,” said one analyst, who wished to remain anonymous. “the market is reacting cautiously as it awaits further details on the potential impact of the merger.”
other banking stocks also saw mixed performance. Monte dei Paschi di Siena gained 0.66% to €6.717, while BPER Banca rose 1.64% to €6.326.
