Severe Weather Grips Italy, Claiming Lives and Forcing Evacuations
– A severe weather system is battering central and southern Italy, triggering floods, landslides, and widespread disruption. The extreme conditions have already claimed at least one life and prompted evacuations across multiple regions.
In the province of Cosenza, heavy rainfall overnight caused the Campagnano River to overflow its banks, with further flooding reported at the confluence of the Crati and Busento rivers. Similar conditions are impacting the Cilento region. Tragically, a man died near Rome after a landslide engulfed his home in Formello late Thursday. The victim was 58 years old.
Landslide Claims Life Near Rome
According to reports, a portion of a hillside collapsed, likely due to the recent heavy rains, and debris cascaded onto a three-story building. Firefighters and Carabinieri from the Cassia company responded to the scene. Two other residents of the building sustained injuries and were transported to a hospital, reportedly in non-life-threatening condition.
Cosenza Faces Flooding and Road Closures
In Cosenza, authorities proactively relocated several families as a precautionary measure. Numerous vehicles became stranded in the floodwaters. Strong winds also contributed to the chaos, felling trees and blocking roads. Fire crews, forest Carabinieri, and civil protection personnel are working to clear debris and restore access.
Cilento Grapples with Coastal Damage
Salerno province and the Cilento area are experiencing significant damage from the ongoing storms. On the regional road 562 del Mingardo, work is underway to secure the roadway after the sea deposited stones, sand, and debris onto the surface. A landslide also occurred on the road connecting Camerota to Lentiscosa, but was quickly addressed, restoring traffic flow.
Road Closures and Evacuations Along the Coast
Much of the Salerno coastline is experiencing rough seas, with debris washing onto roads. The state road 163 ‘Amalfitana’ remains closed at kilometer 48,800 due to a landslide. Regional Civil Protection Assessor Fiorella Zabatta stated that approximately 50 cubic meters of debris detached from a rocky slope, prompting the precautionary evacuation of six families. She is scheduled to participate in a coordination meeting at the Salerno Prefecture this morning.
Naples Province Evacuations
In Arzano, a town in the province of Naples, 14 families, totaling 34 people, were evacuated as a precaution after a partial collapse of a building on Via Zanardelli. The building was reportedly subject to a demolition order for safety reasons that had not been executed.
Search Continues for Missing Fishermen
The search for Antonio Morlè and Enrico Piras, two fishermen from Tortolì who went missing after their fishing vessel, the “Luigino,” sank off the coast of Santa Maria Navarrese on Wednesday, has resumed. The Arbatax Coast Guard suspended the search yesterday due to the severe weather but redeployed the CP811 patrol boat this morning to the area where the Luigino went down. The search area has been expanded, though the Nemo 11 helicopter remains grounded.
The situation remains fluid as authorities continue to assess the full extent of the damage and respond to ongoing emergencies across affected regions.
