Italy Braces for Prolonged Period of Wet Weather, Potential Cold Snap

Italy is facing a sustained period of unsettled weather, with rainfall expected almost daily over the coming two weeks, according to meteorological expert Colonel Mario Giuliacci. His forecasts, detailed in a report on February 5th, 2026, indicate at least three Atlantic disturbances will impact the country by February 9th, followed by two more between February 10th and 14th, maintaining a consistently disturbed atmospheric pattern.

Giuliacci, in a video posted to his YouTube channel MeteoGiuliacci, explained that the initial phase, from February 5th to 9th, will bring widespread rainfall across the entire national territory. However, the heaviest precipitation is anticipated along the Tyrrhenian regions and in the Northeast, particularly between Friuli and Venezia Giulia. The central and southern Adriatic regions are expected to receive comparatively less rain.

Between February 10th and 14th, the pattern will repeat with rainfall nationwide, but with increased intensity over Lucania and the Tyrrhenian Calabria. The Adriatic side will again remain relatively sheltered from the heaviest downpours. Finally, in the latter part of the period, between February 15th and 19th, rainfall will be concentrated primarily on the Ligurian Levante and the Tyrrhenian regions.

Snowfall is also expected to be significant, affecting both the Alpine arc and the Apennine ridge. As early as Thursday, Giuliacci forecasts substantial snowfall on the central-western Alps and the Dolomites, with accumulations potentially reaching 50 centimeters at altitudes between 500 and 800 meters. On the central-southern Tyrrhenian Apennines, snow is expected above 1200-1400 meters. Friday, February 6th, will see the snow line rise slightly on the Alps, settling between 1000 and 1300 meters, while skiing conditions will be present above 1200 meters across the entire Tyrrhenian side of the Apennines. Over the weekend of February 7th and 8th, snowfall will continue to blanket the Tyrrhenian Apennines down to around 800 meters.

Perhaps the most noteworthy aspect of the forecast is the potential for a cold snap around the middle of the month. Until February 14th, the cold will be felt moderately in the North, with temperatures remaining above average in the Center-South, but not exceeding 20 degrees Celsius. However, between February 14th and 18th, a sharp temperature drop is likely. During this period, from Saturday, February 14th, to Wednesday, February 18th, a decidedly wintery phase could develop, with snowfall potentially reaching very low altitudes, particularly on the Adriatic side of the Apennines. While this trend still requires absolute confirmation, it would mark a transition from an autumnal and rainy context to a decidedly frigid one.
