Itoje & Beirne: Lions Test Spots on the Line vs Argentina
Itoje and Beirne Forge Lions Partnership,Embrace Key Role
Updated June 19,2025
Coach Farrell has announced a revamped Lions squad, featuring 14 players set to represent the team for the first time. Replacement hooker Ronan Kelleher is the only player not selected for the opening game due to late arrival from domestic play-off commitments.
A notable pairing is the second-row partnership of Maro Itoje and Tadhg Beirne, both veterans of the South Africa tour four years prior. Itoje also toured New Zealand in 2017. Although Beirne primarily played as a blind-side flanker in South Africa, both were on the field during the climactic moments of the second and third Tests.
Having shared a room on the previous tour, Itoje and beirne have cultivated a strong bond.”We spent a bit of time together in the last tour and built a good relationship, and it’s been amazing that we’ve been able to continue on this tour,” Itoje said.
Itoje also praised Beirne’s abilities.”He’s a fantastic player, that’s clear for everyone to see. His ball skills, the way he moves the ball and controls it, and he has that level of physicality to his game which is really notable,” Itoje said.
Despite frequently facing each other in matches between England and Ireland, or Saracens and Munster, Itoje and Beirne are now combining their strengths.
Beirne highlighted their collaborative approach, particularly in the line-out strategy. “We’ve been bouncing ideas off each other for the line-out and stuff with JD [forwards coach John Dalziel],” he said. “So far the relationship’s been really good and really enjoyable.”
What’s next
The Itoje-Beirne partnership will be crucial as the Lions move forward, leveraging their combined experience and mutual respect to solidify the team’s performance.
