ITV greenlights “The Dark,” Serial Killer Thriller Set in Scotland

ITV is set to air ”The Dark,” a new six-part serial killer thriller. The series comes from Poison Pen, the production company launched by former BBC drama head Ben Stephenson under ITV Studios in 2023.
Based on G.R. Halliday’s debut novel, “From the Shadows,” Matt Hartley adapted the script. The plot centers on Detective Monica Kennedy as she investigates the murder of a young man staged in the Scottish wilderness. Kennedy fears this is onyl the start of a series of crimes terrorizing the rural community.
According to a synopsis, rising paranoia will expose secrets, forcing locals to confront the reality of a serial killer among them. Kennedy, drawing on her experience with humanity’s darkest aspects, becomes entangled in a dangerous game with the killer. Though, her past resurfaces, causing her to question her judgment, potentially endangering herself and her family.
Polly Hill, ITV’s director of drama, approved the series. She described “the Dark” as a gripping drama featuring DI Monica kennedy’s pursuit of a serial killer in a chilling Scottish setting. Hill praised Hartley’s adaptation and expressed delight in collaborating with him and Poison pen.
Stephenson called “The Dark” a thrilling series with unexpected twists. He noted the central character’s mysterious past provides unique insight into the killer and empathy for the victims.
Hartley will executive produce alongside Stephenson, Preethi Mavahalli, Luke woellhaf, and Fern McCauley. Matt Brown will produce, with Lena Rae and Nessah Muthy contributing as writers. Gilles Bannier is the lead director and also an executive producer.
Filming for “The Dark” is scheduled to begin in Glasgow and surrounding areas in 2025.ITV Studios will handle international distribution.
