IU Health Hospital Project Celebrates Construction Safety and Milestone in Indianapolis

Indianapolis—Indiana University Health’s downtown Indianapolis hospital construction, a massive healthcare construction project, recently celebrated two milestones: Construction Safety Week and the topping-out of its new 2.5 million-square-foot facility. The events, hosted by Gilbane Building Company and F.A. Wilhelm construction,recognized safety,collaboration,and progress on the expansive project.
The new hospital aims to expand the medical campus, enhance patient care, and attract leading medical professionals. consolidating services from Methodist and University hospitals is projected to save $50 million annually. The 44-acre site will house 50 operating rooms and 380 outpatient exam rooms,built by a team of about 500 construction workers.

Construction Safety Week, observed May 5–9 under the theme “All in Together – Plan. Own. Commit,” featured safety demonstrations and the signing of a steel beam. The beam was later raised during the topping-out ceremony.
The topping-out tradition involved hoisting the signed beam, decorated with an American flag and an evergreen tree, symbolizing good luck and safety.Project leaders commended the collaborative environment fostered among the more than 1,000 workers on site.
“Safety is more than a protocol—it’s a mindset,” said Tim St. Clair, executive director of design and construction at IU Health. “Construction Safety week reminds us that every beam raised and every milestone reached is absolutely possible when we prioritize the well-being of every person on site.This team has done an exceptional job living that commitment every day.”
