Ivan Cleary, the long-serving head coach of the Penrith Panthers in Australia’s National Rugby League (NRL), has announced he will step down at the end of the 2027 season, marking the end of an era for the club’s dominance in the competition.

The decision, confirmed by multiple NRL outlets, including 1News, RNZ and Stuff, comes after Cleary guided Penrith to three premiership victories in five years, solidifying their status as one of the league’s most successful franchises. The Panthers, who have been in contention for titles since Cleary’s arrival in 2018, are now facing an uncertain future without their coach at the helm.

In a statement shared across NRL platforms, Cleary expressed his desire to transition into a broader coaching role, with interest already emerging for potential opportunities at the international level, including Australia’s Test or State of Origin teams. NRL.com reported that Cleary is actively seeking a new challenge, though no formal offers have been confirmed.

Penrith’s recent form, however, has raised concerns about the club’s ability to sustain success post-Cleary. After a disappointing 2026 season that saw the Panthers finish outside the top eight for the first time in nearly a decade, questions have been raised about whether the club’s “dynasty” is in decline. Fox Sports described the situation as an ugly collapse, with fears that the loss of Cleary could accelerate a downward trajectory.

The Panthers’ 2027 campaign will now be their last under Cleary’s leadership, with the club expected to begin a search for a successor in the coming months. The timing of the announcement suggests Penrith will prioritize stability for the remainder of this season while planning for a smooth transition next year.

Cleary’s departure also underscores the NRL’s evolving coaching landscape, where high-profile exits—such as those of Wayne Bennett (Melbourne) and Trent Robinson (Canberra)—have become increasingly common. His move into international coaching would align with a broader trend of NRL coaches seeking greater challenges at the elite level.

For now, the focus remains on Penrith’s 2027 season, with the club aiming to reclaim their premiership form before Cleary’s tenure concludes. The Panthers’ next steps, including potential roster changes and recruitment strategies, will be closely watched as the NRL prepares for what could be a pivotal off-season.
