Updated June 05, 2025
After an eight-year hiatus and the passing of Adam Schlesinger in 2020, Ivy, the New York-based indie trio, is set to release a new album. traces of You,featuring previously unreleased material with contributions from Schlesinger, will be available Sept. 5 via Bar/None records. The album is a tribute to Schlesinger’s musical contributions to the band.
Dominique Durand and Andy Chase, the surviving members, along with Bruce Driscoll, revisited their demo archives to create the album. The lead single, “Say You Will,” originated from a 2009 demo featuring Schlesinger on bass and keyboard. Joey Waronker, known for his work with R.E.M. and Atoms for Peace, plays drums on the final version.
Ivy, formed in 1994, gained recognition with their 1997 album Apartment Life. Songs like “This is the Day” and “The Best Thing” achieved mainstream success. The band slowed down in the 2000s as Schlesinger focused on Fountains of Wayne. Their last album, After Hours, was released in 2011.
“The songs here were all unused and abandoned ideas from the various albums and film scores we worked on,” the band members said. “We’d never released any parts of them.”
The album showcases Ivy’s diverse musical range, from “Fragile Peopel” to “The Great Unknown,” which has an electro feel, and “Hate That It’s True,” led by acoustic guitar.
According to the band, “The Midnight Hour,” the album’s opening track, was the moast complete fragment.”adam’s bass was there and Andy had played all the guitar and keys,” they said. Brian Young and Jody Porter, also from Fountains of Wayne, contributed to the recording.
The band members said Dominique disliked the existing idea for “Heartbreak,” which was Andy on guitar and keys and Adam on bass with the main part of the song you hear at the introduction. By the time we added the horn parts, the chorus chords and found depressing lyrics to offset the happy sound of the song, she came around.
Asked what fans will enjoy most about hearing Schlesinger’s work on Traces of YouIvy’s members answer, “on one song, you’ll hear Adam on bass, the next on acoustic, the next on keys, the next he supplied a part of the melody with mumbled lyrics (which we deciphered and completed). His contributions were always gems and we never had to make them work with what we were doing. They were always essential to the idea, or we wouldn’t work on the track.”
