J Batt will become the new athletic director at Michigan State University, agreeing to a six-year contract, sources said. An official declaration is expected Monday. The move will significantly increase Batt’s compensation.
Michigan State targeted Batt as of his fundraising background and experience in a power conference, seeking to modernize its athletic department.he has been the athletic director at Georgia Tech as October 2022.
During his tenure at Georgia Tech, Batt quickly gained a reputation for fundraising and revenue generation. Donations increased by 43% to $78.2 million in his first fiscal year. he also spearheaded a financial partnership with Hyundai, which included naming rights for the field.
Batt is also part of the Implementation Committee, which is shaping the future of college sports in anticipation of the House Settlement. He was slated to earn more than $1.2 million this year at Georgia Tech.
Before Georgia Tech, Batt was the University of Alabama’s COO and chief revenue officer, launching a 10-year, $600 million capital campaign. At Georgia Tech, he promoted football coach Brent Key and hired Damon Stoudamire as men’s basketball coach. he also worked to improve the game-day experience.
His experience at Alabama included serving as the sport administrator for men’s basketball and gaining football experience. This combination of football and basketball experience appealed to Michigan State, which aims to be competitive in both sports.
Batt’s career also includes stints at East Carolina,Maryland,James Madison,William & Mary,and his alma mater,North Carolina.He played soccer at UNC and was a member of the 2001 NCAA championship team. While at UNC, he developed a relationship with current Michigan State president Kevin Guskiewicz.
Guskiewicz prioritized an athletic director who can navigate the changing landscape of college athletics and manage internal and external relationships. Tom Izzo, Michigan State basketball coach, served as co-interim athletic director with Jennifer Smith after Alan Haller’s departure.
