J.T. Miller Nears Return for Canucks, Forbort Also Expected Back
Canucks’ Miller Nears Return, Forbort Set too Play Against Panthers
Vancouver, BC – Vancouver Canucks fans received a boost of optimism Wednesday as top-line center J.T. Miller participated in his frist full practice since taking a leave of absence for personal reasons on November 19th. While there’s no confirmed date for his return to game action, the signs are encouraging.
“He’s getting close,” Canucks coach Rick Tocchet said. “I don’t know the exact date, but close is better than long term. He’s doing really well and we’ll just kind of chip away and see what happens tomorrow morning.”
Miller, who has missed 10 games, could possibly suit up against the Florida Panthers on Thursday night (10 p.m. ET; TVAS, SNP, SCRIPPS). Tocchet remained noncommittal, stating, “Anything is a possibility, but right now he had a good day.”
The 31-year-old forward’s return would be a significant boost for the Canucks. Miller has tallied 16 points (six goals, 10 assists) in 17 games this season, showcasing his importance to the team’s offensive attack.
“One of our better players, engine of our team, him and [defenseman Quinn hughes], so it’s a huge add,” forward Conor Garland said of Miller. “He’s a big presence on and off the ice. He’s one of the best players in the League, so we’re lucky to have him.”
Adding to the positive news, defenseman Derek Forbort is also expected to return against the Panthers after missing 17 games wiht a lower-body injury. Forbort, who signed a one-year deal with the Canucks in July, has played just four games this season.
“First game back, it’s just kind of little nuances of the game like stick positioning, and little things that get better as it goes,” Forbort said. “It kind of feels like you’re starting from scratch, but Game 2 usually feels pretty good.”
News Directory 3 Exclusive Interview with Hockey Analyst Jack Thompson
ND3: J.T.Miller appears to be nearing a return for the Vancouver Canucks. What kind of impact will his presence have on the team’s performance?
Jack Thompson: Miller’s return is huge for the Canucks. He’s their offensive engine, a key driver of their scoring. Not only does he put up points himself, but he elevates the play of his linemates. Having him back in the lineup will give the Canucks a much-needed boost.
ND3: Canucks coach Rick Tocchet has been cautious, saying Miller is “getting close” but hasn’t committed to a specific date for his return. How do you interpret that statement?
JT: Tocchet is right to be cautious. It’s important not to rush Miller’s return. They need to make sure he’s fully recovered and ready to go.
I think it’s a good sign that he participated in a full practice. It suggests he’s making progress and could perhaps play against the Panthers. However, Tocchet’s careful wording suggests there’s still a slight chance he might need another day or two.
ND3: Along with Miller, defenseman Derek Forbort is also expected to return against Florida. how notable is his return for the Canucks’ defensive corps?
JT: Forbort’s return adds stability to the Canucks’ blue line. He’s a solid defensive defenseman who brings physicality and experience. While he may not be flashy, he’s a reliable presence who will help tighten up the Canucks’ defense.
ND3: What are your expectations for the Canucks moving forward with both Miller and Forbort back in the lineup?
JT: I think the Canucks will see an immediate enhancement. They’ve struggled offensively in Miller’s absence, and his return will give them a much-needed spark.Forbort’s presence will shore up the defense, making them tougher to play against.
It’s still a rebuilding season for the Canucks, but having these two key players back in the lineup will give them a better chance to compete and potentially make a push toward a playoff spot.
