The upcoming Michael Jackson biopic “Michael” will feature a blend of Jaafar Jackson’s vocal performance and original Michael Jackson recordings for its musical numbers, according to Oscar-winning music supervisor John Warhurst.
Jaafar Jackson, who portrays his uncle Michael Jackson in the film, delivers live vocals on set that are blended with the King of Pop’s original recordings to create the singing performances heard throughout the movie.
As Warhurst explained, the filmmakers had the option to record Jaafar Jackson and young actor Juliano Valdi (who plays a 10-year-old Michael Jackson from the Jackson 5 era) in a studio for the songs, and confirmed they were capable of delivering those vocals.
However, the final approach uses Jaafar and Valdi’s live performances in scenes where no genuine Jackson recording exists—such as when Jaafar scats in the studio during “Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough” or when Valdi performs initial takes of “I Want You Back”—while allowing Michael Jackson’s original voice to dominate in numbers where pure recordings are used.
The technique ensures audiences hear Jaafar Jackson’s interpretation in more dramatic or spontaneous musical moments, while the iconic sound of Michael Jackson’s voice remains central to the film’s most recognizable musical sequences.
The film, which traces Michael Jackson’s journey from his early days with the Jackson Five to his status as a global entertainment icon, is set for release next year and has already generated attention for Jaafar Jackson’s portrayal, including his vocal and physical resemblance to his uncle.
