Current Situation
Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho, 25, has reportedly turned down a potential transfer to Roma during the current transfer window. Interest from Juventus also surfaced, but a move did not materialize. This comes after an 18-month loan spell that included time with both Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea, neither of which resulted in a permanent deal.
Chelsea was required to pay a £5 million penalty to Manchester United after failing to fulfill an obligation to sign Sancho following his loan period. Sancho originally joined Manchester United four years ago,in 2021,for a reported fee of £73 million. His last appearance for the club was in the Community shield in August 2024.
Goalkeeping Considerations - Separate from Sancho Deal
Manchester United’s pursuit of Jadon Sancho is being handled independently of their interest in Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, according to sources within the club. The BBC reported on United’s interest in Martinez on August 31, 2025 here.
United are also considering Senne Lammens, the goalkeeper for Royal antwerp, as a potential addition to their squad. Though, club sources emphasize that they will not sign both Martinez and lammens. As of September 1, 2025, there is no definitive decision on which goalkeeper, if either, will be signed to strengthen their goalkeeping options. The BBC detailed the goalkeeping situation here.
Background on Jadon Sancho
Sancho rose to prominence with Borussia Dortmund before his move to Manchester United. His time at United has been marked by inconsistency and a lack of consistent playing time, leading to the loan spells. The failed permanent moves to Dortmund and Chelsea raise questions about his long-term future with the club.
Looking Ahead
The transfer window remains open, and Sancho’s situation could change before its closure. Manchester United will likely be looking to offload the player to recoup some of the £73 million they initially invested. The club’s goalkeeping situation also remains fluid, with a decision expected in the coming days.
