Iranian director Jafar⁣ Panahi, despite facing years of restrictions, ⁤including imprisonment and a filmmaking ban, won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival for ⁣his film, “It Was Just an Accident.” The film, a political drama set in present-day Iran, explores themes of⁤ oppression and⁣ resistance‍ through the story of a mechanic who suspects a connection between a car accident and his own past traumas.

Panahi’s career ‌has been marked by defiance. Despite a 2010⁣ sentence that included a six-year prison term and a 20-year ban on filmmaking, he continued to create acclaimed works, often smuggling them out of Iran.
